Gene & Cell Therapy
Institute
(GCTI)
1. Background and Purpose of Establishment
Unlike traditional therapeutics, advanced biopharmaceuticals—such as gene therapies, cell therapies, and tissue engineering products—offer revolutionary possibilities for the fundamental treatment of incurable and intractable diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders. Advancements in genetic diagnostic technology have enabled the fundamental treatment of rare genetic diseases, while "one-shot" and personalized treatments are now addressing unmet medical needs in clinical settings. As the utilization of advanced biopharmaceuticals increases in actual medical practice, the government is fostering the advanced bio sector as a key global leading industry.
2. Major Research Areas
A. Development of Advanced Regenerative Medicine Technology : Research on advanced regenerative medicine technologies that can be utilized in clinical settings.
B. Research on Advanced Biopharmaceutical Technologies Discovery of core source technologies for cell and gene therapies. Development of therapeutic candidates and establishment of quality assessment methods.
C. Development of GMP Production Technology Securing clinical-grade production technologies for advanced biopharmaceuticals. Research on advanced quality enhancement technologies that meet global standards.
3. Expected Effects
A. Medical Impact:Development of advanced biopharmaceuticals and regenerative medicine technologies applicable to clinical practice. B. Technical Impact:Acceleration of the development of gene and cell therapies through dedicated research. C. Talent Cultivation:Training of creative experts specialized in translational research and the biopharmaceutical industry.

In response to these trends, the Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology (SAIHST) at Sungkyunkwan University—which cultivates field-oriented experts and physician-scientists through research and educational collaboration with Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Medical Center—has established the "Gene & Cell Therapy Institute."The institute aims to proactively and systematically promote the research and development of advanced regenerative medicine and advanced biopharmaceuticals.
