On August 6, 2025, a welcome ceremony was held at Schweitzer Hall, Irwon Campus, to mark the first visit of doctoral students from the University of Cologne to Korea. The event was organized as part of the Korea–Germany International Research Training Group (IRTG) program, jointly led by Professor Yoon-La Choi, Chair of the Department of Convergence Biomedical Science (SAIHST) at Sungkyunkwan University, and Professor Reinhard Buettner from Germany.
The program aims to investigate the mechanisms of metastasis and therapeutic resistance in lung cancer by integrating artificial intelligence technologies into research on tumor heterogeneity and genomic instability. Through complementary expertise exchange and joint supervision, the initiative seeks to nurture next-generation global researchers and develop effective treatment strategies with clinical applications.
The ceremony featured an opening session, welcome remarks, congratulatory speeches, and introductions of participating institutions and faculty members, followed by a photo session and networking opportunities.
In the welcome remarks, President Jibeom Yoo of Sungkyunkwan University and Deputy Head of Mission Joern Beissert from the German Embassy in Korea warmly greeted the participants. This was followed by remarks from Director Yoon-Sil Jang and former Director Yeop Yoon of SAIHST, as well as Professor Reinhard Buettner of the University of Cologne, who emphasized the significance of Korea–Germany collaboration and its future prospects.
In addition, Jong-Deok Kim, Executive Director at the National Research Foundation of Korea, introduced policies on global collaborative research, and Professor Panki Kim of Seoul National University shared insights from prior IRTG program experience. The event concluded with reflections from trainee representatives of both Germany and Korea, followed by closing remarks from Professor Yoon-La Choi.
