Department Chair’s Message

Department of Digital Health: Center for Future Personalized Medicine Leaders:

Medicine has always advanced by introducing new technologies into clinical practice. Just as X-ray technology, antibiotics, molecular biology, and endoscopy brought qualitative leaps in the past, digital technology—represented by ICT—is now opening up brilliant possibilities for the future of medicine.

The Department of Digital Health is the first in Korea to cover emerging fields such as Connected Health (including Mobile Health), Data Science, Genomic Analysis, Medical Artificial Intelligence, Medical Informatics, Digital Therapeutics (DTx), and Smart Hospitals. Students entering our department will experience the virtuous cycle of data that enhances healthcare and medical value by working with various experts and utilizing digital technologies. Through this journey, they will grow into next-generation leaders steering future medicine based on digital health.

Future medicine is often described by the 4Ps: Predictive, Preventive, Participatory, and Personalizedmedicine. Digital health is the most powerful methodology for realizing this future. We believe that a bright outlook for future medicine directly translates to a bright future for our department and its students.

Department Overview

In response to the rapidly increasing global interest and expectations from the medical community and industry regarding future medical research and personalized medicine, our department cultivates creative talents with global competitiveness. We achieve this through convergence research and education in digital health, comprehensively linking various disciplines such as Big Data Analytics, Data-Driven Medicine, Mobile Healthcare, Population Health Management, and Smart Hospital.

Health and Medical Data Science is a field that aims to develop and apply new methodologies for big data analytics required in the entire process—from designing challenging research in all areas of medicine and life sciences to creating medical value—based on an understanding of diverse fields such as biology, clinical medicine, genetics, genomics, public health, statistics, and computing. Due to global demand for future medical research and applications, there is a pressing need for medical research leaders and practical experts equipped with specialized knowledge in health and medical data science. Furthermore, in the field of Connected Health—which is advancing rapidly based on IT technologies such as mobile technology and the Internet of Things (IoT)—it is vital to foster research personnel who can practically implement and innovate patient care models to contribute to medical progress and the promotion of public health.

The Korean healthcare sector and the government also deeply recognize the need for comprehensive, convergent, and systematic professional education in medical knowledge and data science. In line with global trends, we are committed to nurturing talents with global competitiveness through convergence research and education. Moreover, the research systems and human resource development models developed in our department will enable Korea to effectively respond to the exploding social demand for research and expertise in the digital health sector.
