Sungkyunkwan University’s Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology (SAIHST) successfully held the 1st International Symposium on December 4, 2025, under the theme “Aging, Healthy Longevity, and the Future of Intelligent Medicine.”

As the inaugural event of an annual international symposium series, this meeting holds particular significance as the first global forum organized by SAIHST to explore the fundamental mechanisms of aging, the potential for rejuvenation, and strategies to extend healthy lifespan amid rapidly accelerating population aging. The symposium provided an important platform to discuss the future direction of medicine through interdisciplinary perspectives.

The symposium attracted more than 500 participants, including leading researchers and experts from Korea and abroad, demonstrating strong international interest. The program consisted of opening and closing keynote lectures along with five thematic sessions, where participants shared cutting-edge research and engaged in discussions on key issues in aging, longevity, and intelligent medicine.

In the Opening Keynote, Professor Vadim Gladyshev (Harvard Medical School) delivered a lecture titled “Targeting Aging, Longevity, and Rejuvenation,” presenting recent insights into aging research. In the Closing Keynote, Professor Steve Horvath (UCLA / Altos Labs), developer of the epigenetic clock, introduced emerging directions in rejuvenation research through his talk “Rewinding the Epigenetic Clock: Emerging Interventions to Reverse Aging.”

Across the sessions, distinguished speakers presented a wide range of recent advances, including mitochondrial functional changes in presynaptic neurons, big data–driven drug repositioning, large-scale proteomic studies on human aging and cognitive decline, DNA methylation–based biological aging markers, nuclear membrane damage and gene expression dysregulation, primary cilia and extracellular vesicles related to sarcopenia, circulating aging-associated factors, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for aging, epigenetic regulation of aging reversibility, studies of Korean centenarians, and multi-modal biomarker analysis. These discussions broadened the scope of research on healthy aging and future medicine.

Building on this symposium, SAIHST plans to further strengthen collaboration among clinicians, data scientists, and precision medicine researchers, while expanding global research networks to address challenges of an aging society and accelerate the development of innovative medical technologies.
