Management and Research:
Cultivating Convergence Practical
Experts
Recently, with rapid technological advancements and shifts in medical paradigms, medical devices integrating 4th Industrial Revolution technologies are being actively developed. The emergence of new product categories, such as AI/Big Data-based medical devices and digital therapeutics (DTx), has made multidisciplinary convergence research essential, moving beyond the traditional scope of biomedical engineering.
In response, the Department of Medical Device Management and Research provides multidisciplinary, field-oriented education covering the entire process from the development of cutting-edge medical devices to their commercialization. This is achieved through collaboration with top medical staff from Samsung Medical Center and experts in digital health, big data, and clinical epidemiology from SAIHST. Our goal is to foster practical experts with convergence expertise and a global perspective, as well as specialized clinical researchers who can contribute to Korea's leap into becoming a leading global medical device nation.
Through diverse programs focused on student success, our department has achieved significant milestones in admission quality, employment rates, and research. We are evolving into Korea’s premier institution in the field of convergence medical device management and research—a sector that has recently emerged as the most critical area of the healthcare industry. Our curriculum aims to bridge the gap between theory and reality to cultivate "problem-solving" talents and establish a definitive career path for graduates. Furthermore, we emphasize clinical-centered translational research, connecting theory and practice to conduct "social problem-solving" R&D, which is the current mainstream of global research.
Students in our department, who systematically master the entire process from identifying needs in actual medical fields to product development and market launch, will grow into next-generation leaders steering the medical device market in the post-4th Industrial Revolution era.

Department Overview
Unlike traditional engineering education that focuses solely on "Medical Device R&D," the Department of Medical Device Management and Research provides multidisciplinary and field-oriented education covering the entire lifecycle of medical device development, including "Global Regulatory Affairs (RA)," "Economic Evaluation," and "Management of Technology (MOT)." Our mission is to cultivate convergence-type practical experts who can contribute to the advancement of Korea as a global leader in medical device management and research.
While the medical device management and research represents an astronomical global market, it is currently dominated by a few advanced nations. Unlike general products, medical devices must undergo various complex professional processes in accordance with medical device laws—from development to commercialization. This requires a workforce equipped not only with traditional R&D skills in biomedical engineering but also with specialized knowledge and experience in every stage of the commercialization cycle. Furthermore, as medical devices are developed for global markets, expertise based on global-level knowledge of international medical laws and actual usage conditions is essential. We are dedicated to cultivating the workforce for national new growth engines through systematic and integrated professional education.
[Key Differences from Traditional "Biomedical Engineering"] Beyond Technical Development: We go beyond engineering to provide education across a broad spectrum of medical device-related fields. Industry-Centered Education: We focus on preparing students for careers in the industry through convergence practical education that meets the actual needs of the medical industry.
